There is also a smaller airport in Samarinda (AAP), but flights from Bali usually require a connection in Balikpapan or Jakarta. Samarinda is a bustling river city known for its vibrant culture and as a base for exploring the Mahakam River. The road between Balikpapan and Samarinda is now a modern toll road, making the transfer much faster.
